Natural Ways to Help Heartburn

Most adults have suffered from heartburn at some time in their lives, the result of overindulging or eating too much spicy, greasy or acidic food. Heartburn is brought on by the opening of the esophagus not quite closing all the way and allowing acid to get into your esophagus. Poor eating habits, smoking, drinking and even certain over the counter medications can make this condition worse. For most people, the pain and discomfort of heartburn goes away on its own, but for chronic sufferers and those with serious pain, medication may be the only answer. While these medications can and do work, there are also some natural remedies you can try that can help alleviate your symptoms without having to resort to taking medications.

One of the best ways to deal with heartburn is to simply not get it in the first place. Limiting your intake of citrus, chocolate, acidic foods, onions, coffee and alcohol will go a long way towards reducing your risk of heartburn. Additionally, avoid overeating and going to bed or lying down soon after your last meal of the day. Both of these will aggravate your heartburn. Factors like stress can also impact heartburn, so try to cut down on the stress in your life or spend time relaxing.

But what if you’re already suffering with heartburn? Well, you’re not completely out of luck. There are some natural remedies that people have been swearing by for years that may help limit the severity of your heartburn.

Chewable Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice. If you like the taste of licorice you’ll love this remedy for heartburn. This gum can help reduce inflammation and help with ulcers, making it a great choice to try if you’re suffering from heartburn.

Aloe Vera Juice. Treat your esophagus right with the soothing properties of aloe vera. You can find this juice at most health food stores.

Baking Soda Don’t have any Tums on hand? Try out this natural antacid instead. Dissolve a small amount in water and drink. Beware, however, that this treatment can cause burping.

Apple Cider Vinegar. Many people swear by this simple kitchen essential as a cure for heartburn. You can take in in a tablet or straight from the jug.

Tumeric. This strong spice can not only help give your food some flavor it can also help your heartburn by stimulating digestion.

You might well end up have to take medications for your heartburn if it’s chronic, but why not try these natural remedies first? You might just find something that works for you– a cheaper, greener way to treat what ails you.
