Colorado offers plenty of opportunities to launch a career in health care. For starters, Colorado has a low unemployment rate compared to the rest of the nation. In December 2009, Colorado’s unemployment rate sat at 7.5 percent, while the rest of the nation averaged about 10 percent. Employment should be even better in nursing, as Colorado is experiencing a nursing shortage, and is also in need of diversifying its nursing workforce, as it is made up of mostly Caucasian females in the profession, according to the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence. Even aside from nursing, health care is a large industry in Colorado. Two of the five largest employers in the entire state are in health care—Centura Health and HealthOne. Other major health care employers include: Exempla Healthcare, University of Colorado Hospital and The Children’s Hospital. About 109,080 people were employed in careers as health care practitioners and technicians in Colorado as of May 2008. The average yearly salary of those in these professions was $68,600.
