Naps Can Be Good for You

If you feel a mid-afternoon desire to take a snooze, it may just be your body’s way of telling you that you need to get some extra Z’s. While naps sometimes get a bad reputation, the reality is that they can be good for you– provided you’re not overdoing it. There are some serious benefits to taking a nap that you might not even realize that just might motivate you to put your day on hold for a bit and indulge in a nap. Still not convinced? Consider these nap time benefits.

Napping can boost memory. Not getting enough sleep during the nighttime can mess with your body’s ability to make new memories, but you can get some of that power back by taking a nap. Napping may be able to help you strengthen memory which can be a big deal when you’re in school or working on a big project.

Napping will make you more alert. It should be no surprise that resting for a few minutes partway through your day can help make you more alert. A short nap can help eliminate the tiredness that can dog your productivity, and upon awakening you should feel more refreshed and ready to face whatever comes your way.

Napping can help your heart. Strange as it may sound, research has found that daytime napping can actually help reduce a person’s risk of death from heart disease. While the reasons behind this aren’t quite clear, it could be because it helps reduce stress and offers the body some downtime it needs.

Napping may increase your IQ. Sleepy before a big test or a huge presentation? You may want to consider a nap. Studies have shown that naps can give individuals a boost in their IQ, letting them work and remember just about anything and everything better.

Napping lets your body repair itself. While a majority of this is done during your nighttime sleep, daytime naps can also be a time when your body can work on cell-repair and hormonal maintenance, helping you feel better and healthier.

The next time you get the urge to take a nap remember these benefits. They just might convince you to indulge in a mid-afternoon siesta and get your brain and your body feeling better and healthier.
