Kidney Stones Can Affect Younger Adults

If you think problems like kidney stones only affect the middle aged and elderly, you might be in for a surprise. While the number of older individuals suffering from this condition is certainly larger, those in their twenties or even younger aren’t immune from the pain that kidney stones can cause. It can be beneficial to learn more about the symptoms, treatments and causes of this condition even as a young person so you can be on the lookout and make sure you do all you can to prevent it.

Kidney stones are small, hard deposits composed of mineral and acid salts that form inside your kidneys. There are several types of stones composed of these like calcium, struvite, uric acid and cystine that are found in the body. If infection is present or the pain is high, individuals may also feel nauseated or have a fever. Most of these symptoms are likely not things you would choose to ignore, so head to the doctor immediately if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

If you’ve already got kidney stones, there are no real treatments out there to help you pass them faster. You have to deal with the pain until they pass. What you can do, however, is work towards prevention. This means making sure you get enough water every day, especially during the summer or if you live in a warmer climate. You may also need to alter your diet to be lower in sugar, sodium and protein. Additionally, you increase your risk of kidney stones by having a higher than normal BMI, so weight loss may be necessary to help reduce occurrence of these painful episodes.

Most people who suffer from kidney stones are over forty but it is possible for individuals at any age to suffer from the condition. Be aware, treat your body right and you can help keep these painful stones at bay, whether you’re twenty four or forty four.
